Warner Bros. Discovery has officially announced that Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, a new documentary by filmmaker Cullen Hoback, will premiere on HBO on October 8, 2024. Airing at 9:00 PM ET and 10:40 PM PT, the film will initially be available exclusively on HBO.
Produced in collaboration with Hyrax Films and Hello Pictures, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery follows Hoback’s three-year investigation into the origins of Bitcoin and the quest to uncover the identity of its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The pseudonymous Nakamoto’s identity has remained a closely guarded secret, despite Bitcoin’s status as the world’s most valuable cryptocurrency.
In an interview with CNN’s Jon Sarlin, Hoback explained the significance of solving this mystery. “The identity of Bitcoin’s creator could influence the future of financial systems worldwide,” Hoback said, stressing the need for transparency in understanding the power that comes with creating a currency of such magnitude.
Cullen Hoback is no stranger to hard-hitting, investigative documentaries.
