On May 15, 2025, Chinese state-owned energy giant China Huaneng Group unveiled the world’s largest fleet of autonomous electric mining trucks in Inner Mongolia, consisting of 100 vehicles equipped with Huawei Technologies’ autonomous driving system. Named “Huaneng Ruichi”, the trucks operate at the Yimin Coal Mine in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, integrating cutting-edge technologies such as 5G-Advanced (5G-A) communication, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, intelligent battery swapping, and high-precision mapping.
Li Shuxue, Chairman of Huaneng Mengdong Group Corporation, emphasized that this marks the world’s largest single deployment of autonomous electric mining trucks, highlighting China’s progress in digitizing traditional industries. The trucks can autonomously load, unload, and transport minerals under harsh weather conditions, achieving 20% higher transportation efficiency compared to human-operated vehicles.
This project aligns with China’s national strategy to leverage AI and advanced technologies for upgrading traditional sectors. Key collaborators include Huaneng Group, Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group (XCMG), and the University of Science and Technology Beijing. The initiative underscores China’s leadership in integrating next-gen technologies like autonomous systems, green energy solutions, and industrial AI into critical infrastructure.
